stephanie's dad

Stephanie's first communication after she was born was to whistle. I think she was about 8 months old. She only whistled one note and she whistled backwards (her whistle came from when she puckered up and sucked air in). We would whistle together in harmony for I knew the timing and the note of her whistle and she would laugh--it takes practice to whistle a duet with someone without laughing. At eight months one doesn't know how deliberate an action is, but Stepher seemed to like an audience for I specifically remember her whistling at the check out line at the grocery store. I remember seeing a clerk show an annoyed look (why is it that whistling annoys people?) until she saw that it was my baby who was the whistler.

What a random little act of kindness it was from the Lord that our baby should whistle. How odd to feel such joy over such a tiny event. To be joined in whistling with my little bitty baby, who now is an old married lady but still is my whistling partner, it makes me happy.
I do wonder if the Lord feels a special satisfaction in joining together with us in some activity?--probably that activity would be some sort of music for I think music is that convergent place between earth and heaven.

  1. That's a neat story! My sister Laura did the same thing - she whistled while she was only 6 or so months old - only one note, like Steph.
